Japan sells ¥2.6 trillion in foreign debt, Bitcoin investors should monitor bond market shifts
Japan's October 6, 2026 auction of ten-year government bonds saw an average yield rise to 3.101%, up from 2.995% at the September 1 sale. Competitive auction coverage increased from 3.29 times to 3.76 times, indicating stronger demand. The yield tail narrowed from 1.6 to 0.2 basis points, reflecting firmer demand at higher yields. The Ministry of Finance reported net long-term debt sales of ¥2.5894 trillion during September 13–26, with ¥1.9049 trillion sold from September 13–19 and ¥684.5 billion from September 20–26. This trend of foreign-debt selling may impact global financing conditions, potentially raising borrowing costs and affecting capital available for risk-taking, including Bitcoin investments. A Bank for International Settlements working paper highlights the influence of global funding conditions on cross-border Bitcoin and Ether flows. The ongoing preference for domestic bonds by Japanese institutions could lead to reduced foreign bond demand, which may pressure Bitcoin financing. Observing whether foreign-debt selling continues alongside funding stress will provide insights into the potential impact on Bitcoin.
