SoFi Tech Solutions, Orbi, and Mastercard Partner to Launch Cryptocurrency-Linked Card in Mexico
SoFi Tech Solutions, formerly Galileo, announced today a partnership with the Mexican fintech Orbi and Mastercard to launch a cryptocurrency-linked card program in Mexico. This will allow Orbi customers to use both traditional fiat currency and funds from their cryptocurrency balances through seamless conversion at the point of purchase, while merchants will receive traditional fiat currency. Stablecoins accounted for 40% of cryptocurrency purchases among Bitso users in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia in 2025, compared to 18% recorded by Bitcoin. This was the first time that stablecoins surpassed BTC in Bitso's regional purchase data. SoFi Tech Solutions will provide BIN sponsorship and the financial technology infrastructure behind Orbi's card program, including issuance capabilities, transaction authorization, processing, and regulatory compliance. The partnership with SoFi and its stablecoin SoFiUSD offered a unique solution that integrated all these components. Additionally, the platform will support future use cases based on stablecoins. "Mexico is one of the largest remittance markets in the world, and stablecoins are becoming an increasingly important way to move money across its borders," said Kathleen Pierce-Gilmore, president of SoFi Tech Solutions. "Together with Orbi and Mastercard, we are providing Mexicans with a secure way to receive, hold, and spend digital dollars, while laying the groundwork for stablecoin-backed payments and large-scale cross-border transfers." The partnership will allow Orbi customers to make purchases with physical and virtual cards linked to their cryptocurrency balances, converting funds at the payment terminal so that merchants receive fiat currency. SoFi Tech Solutions' connection to Mastercard's national payment network in Mexico, Mexico Domestic Switch (MxDS), will process card purchases and cash withdrawals at ATMs. "The Orbi Mastercard is the result of our collaboration with SoFi Tech Solutions and Mastercard, a partnership that has continued to strengthen since our inception," said Leonardo Pérez, co-founder of Orbi. "We are building an experience that transforms digital dollars into purchasing power in the real economy, offering people in Mexico a familiar way to use their assets anywhere Mastercard is accepted." "Digital assets are becoming an increasingly important part of how people safeguard and move their money, and the opportunity lies in making their use as simple and reliable as traditional payment methods," adds Silvana Hernández, president of the North Division for Mastercard LATAM. "By working with SoFi Tech Solutions and Orbi, we are making settlement with stablecoins possible while helping to connect digital assets with the payment experiences people already know, backed by the security and wide acceptance of the Mastercard network." Bringing SoFi's financial technology expertise from the U.S. to Latin America SoFi Tech Solutions, formerly Galileo Financial Technologies, brings to Latin America the expertise that SoFi has acquired in creating, operating, and scaling digital financial services in the United States. This expertise, combined with Galileo's more than 30 years of experience in payments and processing and Technisys' modern core banking capabilities, enables financial service providers across the region to develop connected, digitally-focused products designed to meet the changing needs of their customers.
