Bitcoin.de restructures after MiCA authorization rejection
Bitcoin.de is overhauling its operational model following the rejection of its MiCA authorization by German regulators. The Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) denied Futurum Bank AG's application to become an authorized crypto-asset service provider under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regime, ending the regulator's previous tolerance of its crypto services. Trading on the platform has been largely suspended since June 12, although customers can still withdraw crypto. Futurum Bank will hold assets until they are transferred to a new custodian, with existing logins and customer claims remaining unaffected. Bitcoin Group stated that Futurum Bank applied for MiCA authorization in June 2025, leaving the process unresolved for over 15 months. In response to BaFin's decision, Bitcoin.de plans to operate through two regulated German institutions, one for trading and another for custody, while retaining its app and customer interface. This shift allows Bitcoin.de to focus on technology and customer relationships, while regulated partners manage execution and custody. The company, serving over 1.1 million customers, has not disclosed its partners or a timeline for resuming trading, but is prioritizing finalizing agreements. Bitcoin Group and Futurum Bank are reviewing BaFin's decision and may object within one month or submit a new authorization application. The immediate goal is to complete partner agreements to prevent user attrition during the trading halt.
