US Government Transfers 12267 BTC Worth 1010000000 USD from Bitfinex Hacker Seizure
The U.S. government transferred 12,267 BTC, valued at approximately 1.01 billion USD, linked to the Bitfinex hack in a transaction at 9:33 a.m. ET on Thursday. The majority of the Bitcoin was sent to a new, unlabeled address, while 0.0012 BTC was directed to a second wallet. The transfer did not involve an exchange, and the outputs are marked as already spent, indicating further movement of the coins. This Bitcoin is part of around 94,000 BTC seized in 2022 from Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, who were behind the 2016 Bitfinex hack. Recent similar transfers include about 119 million USD in USDT and 2,574 BTC, valued at around 215 million USD, sent to Coinbase Prime. In July, the government moved 288 million USD in seized crypto to Coinbase Prime. The government's plans for its Bitcoin reserves remain unclear, despite a March 2025 executive order directing forfeited Bitcoin into a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The government currently holds about 306,795 BTC, worth roughly 24.85 billion USD.
