Confession

On the morning of writing the final episode, I sat at my desk, as usual, feeling stuck.

It wasn't that I didn't understand Web3. I didn't understand what this series was about.

I lined up the nine manuscripts. I thought the answer would come from that. But every time it seemed close, I stopped.

"It's about reallocation," I started to say, but stopped. Some of the nine cannot be explained by reallocation. Gold bars do not involve any reallocation. They simply brought along the old habit of believing in extractable metals.

"It's about absence," I began to say, but stopped. A temple without priests, a golf course without membership, a class meeting without a leader, a contract without a guarantor, a festival without a deity. The phrase "without" appears five times. However, Bitcoin does not fit in. Stablecoins do not erase dollars; instead, they stick to them. RWA has brought back the reality that was supposed to be expelled as collateral.

"It's about the shape determined by omissions," I started to say, but stopped. This is not a discovery for the final episode. I wrote it in a clumsier way in Episode 7.

I get stuck here every time.

In the same place, every time.

I tried three times, and each time it didn't match. So, I gave up on summarizing.

Instead, I will do again what I did in Episode 1.

In Episode 1, I drew three auxiliary lines to dissect Bitcoin: national currency, gold, Ethereum. Instead of peering directly into the subject itself, I aimed at three others to outline its contours. At that time, I couldn't say anything without doing so.

The subject of the final episode is the nine manuscripts. I will do it the same way.

I will draw three auxiliary lines: diagram, homework, other people's hands. None of these are my inner thoughts; they are publicly available records. I will not write what I was thinking. I will only correlate what I wrote and what I did afterward.

I will not call in new giants. I will finish with only those who have sat at the desk at least once with these nine.

This article is not an explanation. It is an interpretation.

First Auxiliary Line ------ Diagram

Correlate declarations and achievements.

In Episode 1, I presented two diagrams.

The first was a classification table of seven categories of cryptocurrencies and traditional assets. I added a disclaimer when presenting it. It was merely my arbitrary division into seven, not an official classification or established theory. I left it as a provisional map.

The second was a two-axis map of the abundance of functions and sources of value. I did not include a disclaimer here. On the contrary, I wrote that I intended to continue using this diagram as the vertical thread of the series and would refer back to it in the next episode on Ethereum.

In other words, one was placed with an excuse, and the other was placed with a promise.

The achievements are as follows.

The classification table served as a foundation for moving to the ETH row in Episode 2. In Episode 3, the table itself became a question, leading to the answer that stablecoins belong in the row of fiat currencies. When it was reintroduced in Episode 4, it was already noted that "NFTs are indeed difficult to handle." Episode 5 did not present a diagram and merely stated in the text that "adding to it is not easy." In Episode 6, it disappeared.

The two-axis map was referred back to as promised in Episode 2. That was the end of it. It has not appeared since.

The promised diagram ended in one instance, while the diagram with a disclaimer worked four times.

What this first auxiliary line reflects is not the quality of the diagrams. It shows that the strength of the declarations and the subsequent achievements were facing in opposite directions. The stronger the promise made, the less it was kept. Only those placed with disclaimers worked until they wore out.

Forget the diagrams. Only the questions remain.

Second Auxiliary Line ------ Homework

Correlate questions and answers.

In Episode 6, I wrote about DeFi. At that time, I confessed that I had not touched DeFi. A person writing a series had not even opened a single wallet. It was a personal laziness, but probably not just that; there are a large number of people around the world in the same situation. I wrote that and continued.

Why? I want to think about it again in Episode 10.

I assigned myself homework. The deadline is this article.

I wrote four articles just like that and have come this far. The wallet is still unopened.

The answer is this: it was troublesome.

Not because it was dangerous. The steps can be figured out with research. It's not difficult. It's just that I didn't want to continue.

In Episode 8, I wrote that the reason I am drawn to trustlessness lies in the extension of everyday troubles, not in the emotion of not wanting to trust people, but in the emotion of finding it troublesome to trust people. The same thing was happening on the side that does not touch it. Because trusting is troublesome, I want to deposit. Because the process of depositing is also troublesome, I do not deposit.

And in Episode 8, there is also this line:

Verifiability did not create the people who would verify.

That was a statement about how no one verified during The DAO incident. The closest example is myself, who is writing this. My account was in a state that could be opened. I wrote four articles just like that.

The reason DeFi has not entered the lives of ordinary people probably lies in this extension as well. It is not due to technological flaws, regulations, or rough UIs. No, those exist, but there is something before that. New devices appear claiming to reduce troubles. However, the act of switching itself is troublesome. Devices that reduce troubles require one extra trouble to be paid. Many people do not pay that one time.

What this second auxiliary line reflects is that when the person assigning the homework and the person solving it are the same, the homework is left unattended for four instances. There was no one to enforce the deadline.

In Episode 6, I referred to this as "the person who ended without touching it." I named it but did not write who that was.

Third Auxiliary Line ------ Other People's Hands

Correlate ownership and sources.

In Episode 7, I wrote about assembling three experimental DAOs from internal conversations. It was a story about how the treatment of silence changes the behavior of the organization entirely, and I created a table to arrange them.

The first name was Lazy DAO. The second name was Oblivion DAO. These two names were thrown by me within the company. The names were indeed proposed by me.

What came after that was not me.

The CEO wrote the basic design of the first one. The editor-in-chief rearranged the points, stating that the essence of the DAO is not voting governance but the ability to change states sustainably without violence. The engineer wrote in one line that no votes are random, and abstentions are not counted. The third DAO was born there. The third one is not mine at all.

The names I threw became a structure in half a day. I merely threw them and was left with a problem. I remember what I was troubled by. I wrote about whether there is a means to distinguish between silence after careful consideration and mere indifference from the outside.

What this third auxiliary line reflects is that in the parts I thought I wrote alone among the nine, other people's hands were involved. Moreover, what was involved was not the side of the tools but the side of the conclusions.

Laziness and oblivion are names I threw. However, it was the other three who set them in motion as a form.

The hands involved are not only human. When I listed the equipment in the basement in Episode 8, I wrote this myself. In conversations, I let AI write drafts to dilute my voice. At that time, I wrote it as just one item in someone else's daily life.

To write this article, I am also using external devices.

To what extent, I will not write. It is not that I cannot write it; I just do not feel like counting it now.

Intersection of Three Lines

I drew three lines, and the same shape appeared three times.

In the diagram, the promises I placed were not fulfilled by my later self. In homework, the questions I assigned were left unattended by my later self for four instances. In other people's hands, I treated something created by four people as if it were solely mine.

In all three cases, my past self did not receive what was placed by my later self.

So, I will talk about the writing method.

When writing Episode 7, I only read Episode 6. When writing Episode 8, I read from Episode 4 to Episode 7. Generally, I wrote the nine episodes in that manner. I read the last few episodes thoroughly and did not open the earlier ones.

I have never reread all nine episodes.

The same goes for this article. I wrote that I lined them up, but that is not accurate. I did not line them up; I drew back the necessary parts in reverse. The quotes appearing in the three auxiliary lines above are also not the result of a thorough reading. I pinpointed the paragraphs with familiar phrases and opened only those results.

It was troublesome to read everything back. That’s all.

Here, I felt a bit happy. The order in which the diagrams died and the reasons why the homework was left undone could be explained this way. If I say that the range of memory determined the shape of the nine lines, it could be folded quite neatly.

Since it can be folded, I will stop.

What I could say with three lines of correlation was only that it was so with three cases. Having left out three, I am trying to establish a fourth. Moreover, there are only two pieces of evidence. Only the sixth time during the seventh, and from the fourth to the seventh during the eighth. To explain the nine lines from a fixed-width window is a method I have always disliked in this series. It pushes the reality that does not fit the diagram towards reality, not the other way around.

Therefore, I will not establish a mechanism. This is about all I can say.

It seemed that everything was connected as planned, but in reality, there are quite a few parts where I only remembered what I wrote until yesterday.

And so, the ten lines strangely connected.

One more thing, I will write down. There are parts of this series that assume the reader remembers the content of past episodes. The premise is not established. The writer did not remember.

In the seventh episode, I wrote this: The layout of the classroom is not visible to those in the classroom.

There is one note

Before starting the series, I created a document of concepts.

I must have named the file myself, but I have no memory of doing so. When I opened it, several headings were lined up, and half of them were unused. Under the unused headings, there are seven lines. Even now, I cannot restore what five of those seven lines were trying to say.

Near the end, there is one line that says:

The essence of humanity is laziness and forgetfulness.

Fourteen characters.

I had forgotten.

The person who was trying to write about forgetfulness forgot the conclusion they wrote themselves and took a detour of nearly 100,000 words. It is not a very good story.

I do not intend to place this as the conclusion of the final episode. I cannot place it.

What emerged from the three auxiliary lines is that there is no transfer of records between the person who wrote this document, the person who wrote the nine lines, and the person writing this article now. It is out of order for a person who failed to transfer to present one line of that document as their conclusion.

Moreover, there is a worse coincidence.

The laziness DAO and the forgetfulness DAO from the seventh episode. Two fourteen-character nouns were used as names for design variables four episodes ago. I had forgotten this too. Before being surprised by the concept, I should have opened the seventh episode. I did not open it.

So, I will treat this as a note. Just that there was such a note.

Judgment ------ Not a Revolution, but an Experiment

I will write once about the subject itself. After writing nine lines, how do I see Web3?

At least for my current self, the revolution that was initially proposed does not seem to have succeeded as it is. Eliminating banks. Bypassing the state. Removing hierarchies from companies. Making trust unnecessary. Replacing human discretion with code. The flags of such things and the shapes of what remains now are quite different. Stablecoins carry dollars far away, RWA brings real-world credit back to the chain, and cryptocurrencies are increasing the places where they can survive by connecting to traditional finance.

I do not intend to call that a failure of technology. It is used. It is incorporated into the system. It is useful in places where existing finance could not reach. Each is probably a success. However, I do not feel inclined to call it the same name as the success of the revolution that was once proposed. The dream of eliminating banks and the success lined up on the bank's product shelf are not the same success.

From the perspective of revolution, at least for my current self, it appears to be a failure.

Looking at it as an experiment, it is a bit different.

I will talk about science for the first time in a while. In the first episode's supplement, I looked at gold through physics and chemistry, and at the beginning of the series, I compared Bitcoin to the initial tremors. In science, you prepare two, make them as similar as possible, change only one, and see the difference. What has changed in Web3 is not just one thing. The conditions for participation, the design of incentives, the legal entities, geographical boundaries, and methods of enforcement are all in motion. If I had to choose one roughly, it would be the material. I will try to reassemble what was made by human discretion, negotiation, and credit judgment with code and the market.

I failed to completely transplant humans into code. From that place of failure, I could see what humans were doing.

Because I failed, I could see. I think it is a somewhat mean way to compliment.

The experiment is not over. The system discards the reasoning at the time of departure and survives while incorporating something else. I do not know what Web3 will become from now on. I will not write about the future.

I have written that. I have written it like this in nine lines.

In the first episode, I compared Bitcoin to the initial tremors. I wrote that it was the first moment the seismograph needle moved. I wrote that I do not know if the main shock will come; it may not come. I wrote it in the second episode as well. In the sixth episode, I simply wrote that the needle moved. I wrote it three times.

I could not write a single line about the main shock. What will come when? Will it not come? If it comes, what will happen? The prediction section has been empty from the first episode to this article.

When I write predictions, the mistakes are confirmed when they are wrong.

I have continued to choose a way of writing that does not confirm mistakes for nine lines.

I have written many times that I will write up to what I can see from my current self. It was meant to be a declaration of sincerity. At the same time, it was also an escape route. I think it is both.

Catalog

I will list the metaphors used in the nine lines.

There are no diagrams in this episode. In the episode where I write the history of the diagram, I cannot include the diagram. So I will place it in words.

There is one thing I rephrased in the eighth episode. The place of trust has not changed; it has increased. If arranged by time, it may seem sequential, but if viewed by weight, it is layered.

Gold bars ------ What was taken out was the discretion of issuance. What remained below was the state. What was piled above was the old habit of believing in extractable metals.

A temple without priests ------ What was taken out was the discretion of enforcement. What remained below was the courts and laws. What was piled above was the priest who lost their name.

The shadow of the dollar ------ What was taken out was the bank's counter. What remained below was the bank. What was piled above was the shadow that does not rest.

Membership without a golf course ------ What was taken out was the guarantee of ownership. What remained below was property law and registration. What was piled above was the history.

Cut checks ------ What was taken out was the intermediary. What remained below was law, registration, and custody. It became supported as collateral from below, not from above.

Medieval pawnshops ------ What was taken out was human credit judgment. What remained below was the bank's credit. What was piled above was excessive collateral.

A class meeting without a responsible person ------ What was taken out was the burden of decision-making. What remained below was the company and corporation. What was piled above was the vote.

Contracts without guarantors ------ What was taken out was verification. What remained below was the guarantor and the court. What was piled above was the faceless bearer.

A festival without a sacred object ------ What was taken out was meaning and promise. What remained below was the existing market. What was piled above was the price that points only to the next price.

Only what was not piled will be written separately.

Meaning. Responsibility. Creation of trust. Processing of time.

That’s all.

Aside ------ Humans Seek Meaning

It is over. At least, it is now considered to be over.

In the first episode, there is the same heading. "Aside ------ Humans Seek Meaning." At that time, it was a detour placed before the conclusion. There was a continuation. This time, there is no continuation. Therefore, the detour becomes the destination.

I have written that what was overlooked over nine lines determines the shape of what comes later. What did not enter the above catalog remains here. This is what I overlooked in this article.

With three auxiliary lines drawn, the outline has emerged. The diagram. The homework. The hands of others. All three were bad news.

I should have left it at that.

I lined up the nine lines and named them. Absence. Reallocation. Oversight. Laziness. Forgetfulness. By naming them, the 100,000 words appear to take one form, and I feel a little relieved.

That relief is the most suspicious.

Up to this point, I have not called upon any new thinkers. I will not call upon them at the end either. I will return to those who have been here from the beginning.

Nietzsche. In the first episode, I brought in "The Genealogy of Morals." Humans cannot endure pain itself more than meaningless pain. They cannot endure a void. Rather than not willing something, they would will for nothingness.

At that time, I was supposed to be talking about Bitcoin. Why can humans give meaning to strings of characters? Why can they give meaning to the state? Why can they give meaning to metals?

After writing nine lines, in the end, I am trying to give meaning to the 100,000 words.

In the ninth episode, I wrote about a festival without a sacred object. Even if the inside of the portable shrine is empty, the festival moves. All bearers know it is empty and do not hide what they know. I finally saw a festival that can exist in emptiness in the ninth.

In the tenth line, I put something inside the portable shrine.

The essence of humanity is laziness and forgetfulness.

Above, I wrote that I would treat this as a note. I also wrote that the order of presentation is out of place. I wrote it down and am now presenting it. I put fourteen characters into the empty portable shrine myself.

I named it, but it was four people who structured it. I had forgotten half a day of those four people. I am using what I forgot as evidence of forgetfulness. That is what those fourteen characters are.

I no longer know if this is correct. I only know that I needed these fourteen characters.

Just because I wrote honestly does not mean it will lead to salvation. At the end of the eighth episode, I wrote that the memoir of the man who wrote from the basement to the world is still being read, and that fact does not provide comfort. The same applies here. Even if I write how to create my own sacred object, it does not negate the fact that I created a sacred object. Just because I wrote it does not mean I did it well.

I will leave it and come out.

In the first installment, I wrote this: We do not know when the main shock will come. It may never come. However, the fact that the waveform has been recorded does not disappear.

The needle has moved. The waveform has been recorded. The recording paper has been rolled up nine times, and it is there.

No one has read it again.

Not even the author.

In the first installment, I wrote that humans are a species that seeks meaning. I wrote that we are a species that can seriously believe in fictions. The last line was like this: We all live riding on some fiction and die holding onto a fiction.

At that time, I was writing about the species.

Having reached the tenth installment, I have to rewrite the subject of the same words.

This time for sure.

I will die holding onto a fiction.

I have returned here, still stuck.
