Mexican Pleads Guilty to Laundering 4 Million Dollars Through Cryptocurrencies
Carlos Erick Vázquez González, 48, pleaded guilty in the United States to participating in a money laundering scheme involving approximately four million dollars from drug trafficking, transferred to Mexico through cryptocurrencies. The U.S. Department of Justice reported that Vázquez González accepted responsibility for conspiracy to commit money laundering following a DEA investigation in Lexington, Kentucky. He was part of a network of 'financial intermediaries' that collected drug trafficking profits from various U.S. cities, concealing their origin and transferring the resources to Mexico. Vázquez González received around four million dollars in a cryptocurrency wallet, moving the funds quickly to make tracking difficult. He then sold the cryptocurrencies for dollars in Mexico, handing over the cash to the intermediary coordinating the collection of illicit profits. For his involvement, he received an estimated commission of 40,000 dollars. He pleaded guilty in a federal court in Kentucky, and the sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 17, with a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. This case is part of U.S. authorities' efforts to pursue drug trafficking mechanisms that use cryptocurrencies to move their profits.
