Crypto Industry's Three Major PACs Invest $170 Million to Support Republican Candidates
As the U.S. midterm elections approach, three major political action committees (PACs) in the crypto industry have collectively invested approximately $170 million to support congressional candidates, with funding heavily favoring the Republican Party. Fairshake and its affiliated organizations, backed by Coinbase, a16z, and Ripple Labs, have invested around $154 million and retained about $56 million for the next election cycle. The Digital Freedom Fund, supported by the Winklevoss twins, has invested over $8 million this month, focusing on preventing Democratic candidates from Ohio, Texas, and Iowa from winning Senate seats. The Fellowship Fund, closely associated with Cantor Fitzgerald and Tether, primarily supports Republican candidates while providing a total of $600,000 to three incumbent Democratic lawmakers. Fairshake has invested nearly $56 million to block former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown from returning to the Senate and has invested nearly $11 million to support Nebraska Republican Senator Pete Ricketts. Currently, the prediction market Kalshi gives Democrats a roughly 70% chance of controlling both the House and Senate. Even if the Republican candidates supported by the crypto industry win, significant legislation regarding the future structure of the crypto market and taxation will still require Democratic support to overcome the 60-vote procedural threshold typically needed in the Senate.
