UK Finance Minister Criticizes Nigel Farage’s Bitcoin Use
UK Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey criticized Reform Party leader Nigel Farage's use of Bitcoin in a speech on Monday. Healey described Farage, a pro-crypto member of parliament, as 'Liz Truss with a Bitcoin account,' referencing the former Prime Minister's controversial 2022 mini budget. Healey stated, 'Nigel Farage --- he wants you to think he's a man of the people. But when it comes to the economy, he's Liz Truss with a Bitcoin account.' His remarks drew backlash from the Bitcoin community on X, questioning the term 'Bitcoin account.' Farage, a long-time pro-crypto politician, has framed Bitcoin as a matter of personal freedom and opposition to state control of money. He has expressed interest in digital assets after being debanked by Coutts, a private British bank. Last year, at the Bitcoin 2025 Conference in Las Vegas, he pledged to cut crypto capital gains taxes and push the Bank of England to create a Bitcoin reserve if elected Prime Minister. Farage has faced scrutiny for receiving millions in crypto donations from tech entrepreneur Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo, a co-founder of the now-closed BitMEX exchange. The Metropolitan Police are investigating allegations that Reform violated rules on overseas donations, which the party denies and claims it will cooperate with.
