Nitter Challenges X's Cease and Desist Letters and Announces Its Return After Legal Advice
Nitter will continue operating after receiving legal advice, while the public instance XCancel reappears and the project prepares an announcement about its future in light of X Corp's demands.
- Nitter announced that it will continue after cease and desist letters sent by X Corp.
- XCancel, a public instance based on Nitter, resumed operations on September 7, 2026.
- The maintainer zedeus hinted at an announcement within a week with more details about the project's strategy.
Nitter Returns After Legal Pressure
The Nitter project announced that it will continue after receiving legal advice, a turn that allowed the return of XCancel, a public instance built on its open-source code. On September 7, 2026, the main page nitter.net still displayed a notice informing that the project would move forward and that this instance, along with others, would soon be operational again. XCancel, on the other hand, was already available again for consulting public posts.
The reappearance comes after a campaign of cease and desist letters attributed to X Corp, the company that owns the platform formerly known as Twitter. On August 24, lawyers demanded the permanent removal of Nitter instances and the project's repository, according to The Register, in an offensive that took the services offline and led to the archiving of the repository hosted on GitHub.
The maintainer identified as zedeus indicated that there would be an announcement within a week when the team could reveal more information about the chosen path. For now, the public message confirms the project's continuity but does not detail what legal advice Nitter received, what technical changes it will implement, or whether all instances will be able to return under the same conditions.
The Register reported that it requested comments from X, although no response had been received at the time of publication. This lack of response leaves several questions open about the scope of the demands, the company's possible reaction to the return of XCancel, and the leeway that other operators will have to keep similar services active.
An Alternative Access to Public Posts
Nitter is a free and open-source front end that allows users to read posts from X without opening an account on the platform. The project's repository describes an ad-free experience without the need for JavaScript, features that attract users interested in consulting public information without directly submitting to tracking, the interface, or the terms of use of the main service.
The tool functions as a query layer and not as a full client of the social network, because its users can read public posts but cannot publish through Nitter. This limitation defines its utility: it offers a simpler window to follow organizations and accounts that remain active on X, although it does not replace the participation, messaging, or interaction functions available on the original platform.
Its operation, however, has depended on X maintaining certain access mechanisms to its data. For that reason, operating an instance can become a process of constant adjustments, comparable to a game of hitting reappearing targets, because each technical restriction from X may force modifications to the service or render it temporarily unusable.
The recent history reflects this fragility. In January 2024, zedeus declared the project dead after X disabled the guest accounts on which Nitter depended, but the service returned in early 2025 through account sessions, a solution that the maintainer himself warned made hosting an instance much more difficult.
The Future of the Project Remains Pending
The return of XCancel does not mean that the dispute has ended or that nitter.net has regained its normal operation. The main instance continued to show the continuity announcement, while the project awaits to present more details about the legal advice and the measures that will allow maintaining the infrastructure available.
The decision may also influence other operators hosting public instances based on Nitter. If the project finds a legally sustainable way to continue, those services could evaluate their own return; if X Corp's demands intensify, administrators would have to weigh the legal and technical costs of providing alternative access.
For users, the episode showcases the tension between the availability of public information and the control that a platform exerts over its access channels. Nitter does not allow publishing or modifying original content but facilitates reading posts that organizations decide to keep open on X, a function that some users consider relevant to avoid mandatory accounts and tracking mechanisms.
The announcement promised by zedeus will be key to clarifying whether Nitter has found a stable legal basis, whether it will adopt changes in its architecture, or whether the return of XCancel represents merely a provisional stage. Until that information is known, the project remains active, although its continuity will continue to be conditioned by the technical and legal decisions of X Corp.
