NEAR Enters Bitwise Large-Cap Indexes in October Rebalance
TL;DR: Bitwise's October 30 rebalance brings NEAR into several indexes, replacing UNI or AVAX depending on the benchmark. Index membership alone does not establish a guaranteed price effect.
Bitwise's latest scheduled index changes place NEAR in several large-cap benchmarks, with the outgoing constituent depending on the particular index. The changes were announced on October 22 for the October 30 rebalance.
The development is relevant to investors tracking rules-based crypto exposure. It also illustrates why an index announcement needs to be read at the level of the named benchmark, rather than reduced to a general claim that a token has been added to every Bitwise product.
The changes differ across benchmarks
The official rebalance notice says NEAR replaces UNI in the Bitwise 10 Large Cap Crypto Index and the corresponding ex-Bitcoin index. In the Bitwise 10 Select Large Cap Crypto Index, NEAR replaces AVAX.
The notice also lists LIT replacing ETHFI in the decentralized-finance index. No rebalance was scheduled for the BTC/ETH Equal Weight index in that cycle.
Those are constituent decisions. They do not, by themselves, disclose the execution price of any fund trade, the value of assets tracking each index or a completed purchase by every product that uses Bitwise branding.
An index is a measurement framework
An index defines a set of assets and a method for weighting and updating them. A fund or other investment product may seek to track that framework, but the benchmark and the vehicle are separate things.
The SEC's explanation of index funds describes how a tracking product can use different implementation methods and incur costs. The return experienced by an investor can therefore differ from the published index return.
That distinction matters when interpreting additions and removals. A benchmark change establishes how the reference portfolio is defined; it does not reveal every operational decision made by a manager following it.
Possible flows depend on assets and implementation
An addition can create demand from products required to hold the new constituent. The size and timing of that demand depend on how much money follows the index, the target weight and the way managers execute the change.
Traders may also anticipate a publicly announced rebalance before it takes effect. That makes it difficult to infer a simple price response from the inclusion date alone. Other buyers, sellers and broader market conditions remain relevant.
A removal has the same analytical limitation. It may lead to transactions by tracking products, but it is not automatically a judgment that the token's technology has failed or that all investment managers have rejected it.

Comparing the rules is more useful than chasing the label
The different outgoing assets show why the exact benchmark matters. A main large-cap index, an ex-Bitcoin index and a select index can use different eligibility rules, universes or implementation constraints. Similar names do not make their portfolios identical.
For someone evaluating exposure, the useful questions include how concentrated the index is, how frequently it changes and which risks its rules leave in place. A basket can reduce dependence on one token while remaining highly exposed to the wider crypto market.
The change also creates a clear reference point for future tracking. Published constituent lists and weights can show whether a product is following the intended benchmark, while fees and trading costs explain part of the gap between an index and an investor's return.
NEAR's inclusion is a concrete adjustment to Bitwise's reference portfolios. Claims about inevitable inflows or a guaranteed rally would require evidence beyond the notice. The immediate fact is the new composition, with its market effect dependent on the capital and execution connected to it.
