Lagarde Announces Early Resignation from ECB
Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), has announced her early resignation with eight months remaining in her term. She is expected to step down on February 7, 2027. Her previous statements, which classified Bitcoin as a speculative asset and opposed its inclusion in central bank reserves, are once again drawing attention. In January 2021, at the Reuters Next conference, she described Bitcoin as a highly speculative asset and warned of the risks of money laundering. In 2022, she claimed that digital assets have no value and cautioned about the potential losses for individual investors. Lagarde distinguished between the digital euro promoted by the ECB and private digital assets, emphasizing that there is no institution guaranteeing the value stability of Bitcoin. By the end of 2023, she revealed that her son had invested in digital assets and suffered a loss of about 60%. Since 2021, Lagarde has dismissed the possibility of central banks holding Bitcoin and expressed confidence that central banks participating in the ECB's policy committee would not hold Bitcoin as a reserve asset. While her resignation may bring positive changes to the digital asset industry, the policy direction of her successor remains uncertain.
