Iceland Votes Against Restarting EU Membership Negotiations
Iceland held a referendum on August 30, where 52.8% of voters opposed restarting negotiations to join the European Union, totaling 105,339 votes. This result allows Iceland to maintain its membership in the European Economic Area (EEA) and remain within the Schengen Agreement framework. As an EEA member, Iceland is currently not automatically subject to the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), and cryptocurrency activities are primarily regulated under general financial laws. MiCA is expected to be incorporated into the EEA agreement in the future, but there is currently no official timetable.
