Hair Loss Biotechs Attract Investors as New Treatments Develop
Hair loss biotechs are advancing new treatments for baldness, with Veradermics, Absci, and Cosmo Pharmaceuticals leading the way. These companies are working on a pill, an injection, and a topical drug for pattern hair loss, a condition that has seen no new therapies since the late 1990s. Pattern hair loss affects approximately 50 million men and 30 million women in the United States. Current treatments, minoxidil and finasteride, are decades old and associated with side effects like heart palpitations and reduced sex drive. Veradermics (NYSE: MANE) is developing an oral pill, VDPHL01, with its stock rising nearly 500% since its February IPO. Absci (NASDAQ: ABSI) is testing an injection administered two to three times over six months, and its shares have more than doubled this year. Cosmo Pharmaceuticals has reported positive late-stage trial results for a topical solution but is trading more cautiously compared to its US competitors. The interest in these biotechs mirrors the stock rally of Eli Lilly, which has reshaped investor interest in consumer health biotech, initially driven by its weight loss drugs. Eli Lilly has invested 40000000 dollars in Absci, anticipating that hair regrowth treatments could follow a similar path. None of the three companies has an approved product yet, with the earliest regulatory filings not expected before 2027, indicating that investors are anticipating demand years ahead of any drug reaching the market.
