Hester Peirce, SEC Commissioner, Resigns from Position
Hester Peirce, the Commissioner of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has submitted her resignation, effective October 2. Peirce, known as the "mother of crypto," expressed her gratitude to the President for granting her the greatest honor of her professional career in her resignation letter. She has served on the commission for about eight years and has been the head of the SEC's crypto task force since February 4, 2025. Her statutory term at the SEC ends in June 2025, but under regulations, commissioners can continue to serve for up to 18 months after their term ends. Peirce will join the faculty at Regent University School of Law in Virginia as a professor in November and is expected to help strengthen academic focus in various fields. Her vacant seat may not be filled quickly. Since Trump's entry into the White House, the SEC's approach to regulation in the crypto space has changed, and several executive actions against companies operating in this area have been rescinded. Peirce believes that the release of open-source code should not subject developers to federal securities regulations.
