唐华斑竹 Discusses Gates' Microsoft Sell-off and Buffett's Investment Philosophy

According to Twitter user 唐华斑竹, Bill Gates began selling Microsoft shares after meeting Warren Buffett to diversify his assets. In May 2026, the Gates Foundation Trust submitted documents to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, showing that it sold the remaining 7.7 million shares of Microsoft in the first quarter of this year, worth over $3.2 billion, approximately 21.8 billion yuan. Gates' sell-off began even before he met Buffett, holding about 49% of Microsoft shares when it went public in 1986. In 1994, he hired Michael Larson to establish the family office Cascade Investment, and subsequently sold Microsoft shares in an orderly manner each quarter. Gates' sell-off is aimed at meeting the rigid expenditures of the charitable trust and restructuring risks during the wealth management phase. The Gates Foundation's annual expenditure budget for 2026 has been raised to $9 billion, with a commitment to spend approximately $107 billion of its wealth and close the foundation by 2045. Gates consciously trades the future appreciation of Microsoft shares for charitable execution power and asset risk resistance, representing a deliberate opportunity cost transaction.
