Democrats Prepare Investigations into Trump Family's Crypto Affairs
Donald Trump's crypto activities could soon be the subject of parliamentary investigations. Following their victory in the November 3, 2026 midterm elections, Democrats are preparing inquiries into businesses linked to the presidential family. World Liberty Financial and its stablecoin USD1 are among the main targets. According to Reuters, these activities reportedly generated around $2.3 billion for the Trump family.
In Brief
- Democrats are preparing investigations into Donald Trump's crypto activities.
- Reuters estimates the Trump family's earnings from four crypto projects at $2.3 billion.
- World Liberty Financial, USD1, and foreign investments are among the targeted files.
Democrats Target Trump's Crypto Billions
The Democratic victory shifts the balance of power in Washington. The party won both chambers of Congress in the November 3 elections. Donald Trump's financial activities are already among their investigation priorities. The suspicions are not new. In October, a complaint against Trump and World Liberty Financial had already reignited accusations of conflicts of interest surrounding the stablecoin USD1.
Democrats now have additional means. Starting in January 2027, the new majorities will be able to lead parliamentary committees and summon witnesses. They will also be able to demand the disclosure of financial documents through official subpoenas.
Robert Garcia, who is expected to chair the House Oversight Committee, announced his intention to examine the affairs of the presidential family. In the Senate, Elizabeth Warren is expected to lead the banking committee. The senator has been calling for investigations into the links between the Trump administration and certain crypto companies for several months.
The amounts involved explain this interest. A Reuters investigation published in June estimates that four crypto projects have generated approximately $2.3 billion for the Trump family up to spring 2026. These include World Liberty Financial, the memecoin TRUMP, ALT5 Sigma, and American Bitcoin.
These gains represent estimates based on financial documents, token sales, and valuations. They do not solely correspond to personal profits received by the president.
World Liberty Financial and USD1 at the Center of Investigations
World Liberty Financial plays a significant role in the investigation projects. The crypto company, backed by the Trump family, develops decentralized finance services and issues the stablecoin USD1. It has also marketed the crypto WLFI.
World Liberty token sales are said to have generated over $1.4 billion in gains for the presidential family. Democrats particularly want to examine foreign investments in this company.
A $500 million crypto transaction is drawing particular attention. An investment vehicle linked to Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the national security advisor of the United Arab Emirates, acquired 49% of World Liberty Financial.
This operation had already raised questions about the financial ties between Trump and an Emirati investor. Lawmakers want to determine whether certain government decisions may have favored businesses associated with the president. The conditional approval granted in August by the U.S. banking regulator to a subsidiary of World Liberty is also among the sensitive topics.
Another case concerns Binance. The presidential pardon granted in October 2025 to Changpeng Zhao, the founder of the exchange, could be examined due to the business relations between Binance and World Liberty Financial.
Democrats are particularly interested in the use of USD1 in a $2 billion investment operation. These transactions do not, by themselves, constitute evidence of wrongdoing. The White House and Trump’s associates reject the corruption allegations, which they present as political attacks.

The Crypto Sector Faces a New Battle in Congress
The consequences could extend beyond the Trump family businesses. The American crypto industry had massively invested in the midterm elections to support candidates favoring clearer regulations.
According to Reuters, sector organizations had committed about $176 million to the electoral campaign by the end of October.
The outcome complicates their legislative ambitions. The CLARITY Act, aimed at clarifying the powers of U.S. regulators over digital assets, remains at the center of disagreements. Democrats are particularly calling for additional guarantees against conflicts of interest among political officials.
The arrival of new majorities could prolong these discussions. Congressional committees can conduct their investigations without obtaining the White House's approval. However, they must still adhere to legal procedures, and some document requests may be contested in court.
The investigations will not necessarily lead to criminal charges. For crypto companies, they could nonetheless result in hearings, document requests, and additional legal fees.
Initial proceedings could begin as early as February 2027. Donald Trump will thus have to deal with a Congress more willing to examine the relationships between his private activities and the decisions of his administration. This new situation comes as Republicans had attempted to save the CLARITY Act through concessions on conflicts of interest. The announced investigations could now occupy a significant part of the American crypto calendar.
