Bitchat reaches 66,554 daily downloads in India before government ban
Bitchat downloads for Android peaked at 66,554 unique daily installations in India on July 22, 2026, just before the government ordered GitHub to take down the application's source code. This figure contrasts with an average of 20,000 daily downloads in the previous weeks. Bitchat is a messaging app that allows encrypted message sending via Bluetooth, without the need for internet or user accounts. The surge in downloads coincided with student protests related to the NEET 2026 exam and mobile internet restrictions in New Delhi. On July 23, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) ordered GitHub to remove three Bitchat repositories, citing the Information Technology Act of 2000.
