According to a Bernstein research report, the capital expenditure for building a 1GW data center is estimated to be between $34.6 billion and $39.5 billion, depending on the AI accelerator architecture. The construction cost for NVIDIA's Vera Rubin architecture is the highest, while OpenAI's self-developed ASIC architecture, Jalapeno, is relatively lower. Bernstein has lowered its cost expectation for NVIDIA's Rubin NVL72 single cabinet from $9.1 million to $7.52 million, a decrease of about 17%, mainly reflecting adjustments in expectations for HBM prices and NAND storage capacity. The report notes that the primary economic burden of AI data centers is not electricity costs, but rather the substantial capital expenditures and the depreciation they generate.
