What Is AUM? Understanding Assets Under Management

By: WEEX|2026/07/15 12:52:30

AUM stands for Assets Under Management — the total value of assets that a financial institution, fund, or protocol manages on behalf of clients. It is a common gauge of the scale and, loosely, the credibility of a fund, asset manager, or crypto project.

How AUM Works

AUM is the aggregate market value of the assets being managed for investors. The figure changes daily because of two forces:

  • Inflows and outflows — new deposits raise AUM; redemptions (withdrawals) lower it.
  • Price movement of the managed assets — if holdings rise in value, AUM rises; if they fall, AUM falls.

In crypto, TVL (Total Value Locked) in DeFi protocols is used as a close analog to traditional-finance AUM. AUM is also cited when describing the size of stablecoin issuers, ETFs, and managed funds.

Why It Matters to Traders and Investors

AUM shows how much capital a service or fund has attracted — a sense of scale and, loosely, trust. Larger AUM generally means more money has gathered there, but a big AUM does not by itself guarantee good performance or safety. Beyond size, check the strategy, fees, risks, and transparency too.

FAQ

Q. What's the difference between AUM and TVL? A. AUM is the traditional-finance "assets under management"; TVL is DeFi's "total value locked." Both describe the scale of assets held.

Q. Is a bigger AUM a better fund? A. Large size shows it has attracted capital, but it does not guarantee returns or safety — review what the fund actually does.

Q. How is AUM calculated? A. Sum the market value of the assets managed. It changes daily with flows in/out and asset-price movement.

Q. Why does AUM fluctuate? A. Both fund flows (deposits/redemptions) and the price movement of held assets affect it.
