What Is a Crypto Snapshot? Understanding the "Reference Point" for Airdrops and Forks
A crypto snapshot is the act of recording the balances and state on a blockchain at a specific moment (a specific block). Like taking a photo, it saves "the state of the ledger at that instant," which is why it is called a snapshot. It is a key mechanism used in airdrops, hard forks, and governance voting.
How a Snapshot Works
A blockchain's balances change with every transaction. A snapshot fixes, as of a predetermined block height (block number) or date/time, exactly who held which tokens and how many at that point.
For example, if the rule is "distribute new token B to addresses holding token A as of block number X," the holdings at that reference point are captured by the snapshot, which determines who is eligible.
Common Uses
- Airdrops — to fix the set of addresses (holders of a target token at the reference time) that receive a free distribution of a new token.
- Hard forks — as the basis for carrying pre-fork balances onto the new chain when a chain splits.
- Governance voting — as the reference point that fixes voting power (holdings), preventing manipulation by trading during the voting period.
Why It Matters to Traders and Investors
A snapshot decides "when you must hold to qualify." For airdrops and similar events, knowing the snapshot timing can determine whether you are eligible.
One caution: scams and fake announcements ride on snapshots and distributions. Any message that says "you're eligible for the snapshot" and asks for your private key or wallet connection is dangerous. Never share your private key or seed phrase, and always verify through official announcements.
FAQ
Q. If I don't hold at the snapshot moment, am I excluded? A. In most cases, holding at the reference time is the condition. Rules vary by program — confirm on official information.
Q. Do I need to do anything for a snapshot? A. Usually just holding the token in the eligible address is recorded automatically. If you're asked to enter a private key, suspect a scam.
Q. How do I learn the snapshot date/time? A. It's typically announced in advance by the project officially. Don't take unofficial information at face value.
Q. Can I still receive the distribution if I sell after the snapshot? A. Often yes, if you held at the reference time, but rules differ by program. Always check the conditions.
