Why 22 Trillion-Dollar Giants Refuse to be 'Tokenized'?
Author: Shenchao TechFlow
Introduction: As the cryptocurrency industry makes strides in tokenizing real-world assets (RWA) and U.S. stocks, a frontal assault from traditional establishment quietly began in the weekend edition of The Wall Street Journal. A conservative nonprofit organization in the U.S. published a full-page ad titled "Your Stocks, Their Tokens, Your Problem," listing eight hard risks ranging from pricing discrepancies to legal liabilities, publicly urging CEOs of publicly traded companies to apply for withdrawal from tokenization venues within 30 days. Previously, 22 trillion-dollar giants, including Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, and Alphabet, had already opposed the tokenization projects of OKX and the New York Stock Exchange's parent company, ICE. What exactly are these traditional capital giants afraid of? Whose interests are being touched by the tokenization of U.S. stocks?
Full-Page Ad Fires: "Your Stocks, Their Tokens, Your Problem"
In the recently passed weekend edition (October 24-25), The Wall Street Journal's business section B5 featured a striking full-page paid advertisement. The image depicted a mirror made of stock certificates shattered by a cryptocurrency token, with skulls and nuclear radiation symbols splattering everywhere. The prominent headline directly pierced the hearts of corporate leaders across the U.S.: "ATTENTION PUBLIC COMPANY CEOs: YOUR STOCK. THEIR TOKENS. YOUR PROBLEM."
This explosive full-page print ad was fully funded by the well-known conservative nonprofit organization, the Center for the Study of Leading Leadership (CSLF). The ad ruthlessly challenged the cryptocurrency industry, accusing digital asset institutions of planning to tokenized the core equity of publicly traded companies in "unregulated venues" without authorization, and publicly warned corporate management that they must immediately take legal and compliance measures to protect the rights and interests of their companies and public investors.

Breaking Down Eight Core Accusations: Who's Nerves Are Being Touched by Tokenized Stocks?
The ad's text, written with penetrating clarity, systematically listed eight systemic risks that stock tokenization could bring to real publicly traded companies. The foremost risk is "Pricing Disparities." The ad pointed out that on-chain tokens rely on oracle and private matching mechanisms, making their 24/7 prices prone to significant decoupling from the real stock prices on regulated traditional exchanges, which not only exacerbates trading chaos for retail investors but also induces severe volatility in extreme market conditions.
Next are "Obscured Ownership" and "Impaired Capital Raising." Tokenization buries the real shareholder identities behind blockchain anonymous addresses, leading to difficulties for publicly traded companies in verifying underlying shareholders, severely hindering statutory information disclosure and communication with shareholders. More critically, trading volume and liquidity are massively diverted to off-chain token replicas, substantially weakening the ability of publicly traded companies to issue additional shares and raise equity financing in the public market in the future.
On the compliance and legal front, the ad further sounded the alarm: Cybertheft could cause investors' assets to plummet to zero instantly and drag publicly traded companies into reputational crises; the lack of SEC cross-market monitoring could become a breeding ground for market manipulation; and the peer-to-peer transfer characteristics could open a huge loophole for money laundering (AML/KYC Loopholes). Finally, the ad sternly warned that once on-chain decoupling or collapse occurs, publicly traded companies that fail to apply for withdrawal in time could face joint legal liability.
SEC's 30-Day Withdrawal Window: Why Did 22 Trillion-Dollar Giants Collectively Refuse?
The reason this ad exploded on Wall Street at this time is rooted in the tokenized stock project (OKXICE) jointly planned by the cryptocurrency exchange OKX and the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE). According to in-depth reports from Ledger Insights, this project is based on the tokenized securities venue (TSV) innovation exemption framework launched by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in September this year, planning to directly include 63 U.S. stock giants in the first batch of on-chain trading targets.
However, according to the SEC's regulatory exemption design, tokenized platforms must fulfill written notification obligations to corporate issuers before officially launching, and publicly traded companies have a hard "opt-out" right for 30 days. The ad particularly highlighted this with an alarm icon at the bottom: publicly traded companies must proactively take action to submit written opposition within 30 days of receiving the notice to prevent their stocks from being tokenized; once the deadline passes, the SEC's current rules do not provide any remedial exit channel after trading begins.
Faced with this unique window period, traditional business and financial giants quickly initiated a collective defensive wave. According to a Galaxy official research report and exclusive reports from Unchained, 22 super-large multinational enterprises, including Microsoft, Alphabet (Google's parent company), Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, Arm Holdings, and McDonald's, have formally exercised their opt-out rights after receiving the notice, resolutely refusing to allow their stocks to circulate as tokenized assets on cryptocurrency platforms.

The Game Between Innovation and Establishment: Whose Interests Are Being Touched by Stock Tokenization?
This public resistance triggered by the full-page ad profoundly reflects the deep defensive psychology of the traditional financial establishment towards cryptocurrency RWA assets. The resistance from publicly traded companies and Wall Street giants is not merely against distributed ledger technology itself, but against the "shadowing of assets" without the authorization and endorsement of issuers. Under the traditional legal framework, stocks are not only tradable financial assets but also tied to intricate voting governance rights, dividend distribution mechanisms, and statutory disclosure obligations. The on-chain mirrors operating outside the regulatory framework are impacting the foundational principles of existing corporate law.
For the cryptocurrency industry, which aims to bridge traditional securities and on-chain liquidity, the resistance faced by the OKXICE project serves as a compliance alarm. Tokenization is not simply about packaging publicly traded company stock codes into ERC-20 tokens; in the absence of collaboration with underlying issuers and mature cross-market clearing mechanisms, aggressive tokenization could instead provoke a more severe backlash from regulators. The collective withdrawal of traditional giants and public pressure signifies that the tokenization of U.S. stocks has officially entered a deep-water game of hard confrontation with the existing order of Wall Street.
