What is the MACD? The trading minute
Everything is in the gap. The MACD does not look at the price; it looks at the distance between two averages, and it is precisely this space that tells the story of the acceleration or exhaustion of a trend. After simple moving averages and their crossings, here is their direct descendant, invented by Gerald Appel in the 1970s and now present on all charting platforms. A great classic. To be handled with its user manuals.
Key points of this article:
- The MACD was invented by Gerald Appel in the 1970s and has become a classic on charting platforms.
- A famous bullish signal was given by the weekly MACD of Bitcoin in the summer of 2020, marking the beginning of a historic bull market period.
The MACD, definition of a momentum indicator
The MACD, for Moving Average Convergence Divergence, is constructed in three stages.
First, a MACD line, the difference between a 12-period exponential moving average and a 26-period one.
Then a signal line, the 9-period average of the first.
Finally, a histogram, which measures the gap between the two.
When the MACD line crosses above its signal, it indicates bullish momentum. Below, it indicates bearish momentum. And when the histogram shrinks, the ongoing trend loses its breath.
The indicator thus measures momentum, the speed of movement, not its future direction. This nuance makes all the difference in practice. The parameters 12, 26, and 9 have remained the norm for half a century, even though each platform allows curious users to modify them.
Case study: Summer 2020, when the weekly MACD set the tone
Let’s revisit a signal that has remained famous among long-term enthusiasts. After the halving in May 2020 and the violent crash of spring, the weekly MACD of Bitcoin returned to bullish configuration during the summer, with the line above the signal and the histogram turning green again, while the price hovered around $10,000. The rest is history, with eighteen months of a bull market leading to the peak of November 2021 at $68,982. Analysts who followed this signal did not need to guess the peak; the trend was sufficient for them.
The same tool, read in a short time frame, would have told a different story during the same period, multiplying false signals with every fluctuation. The first lesson of the MACD is that the timeframe makes the indicator. A weekly crossing weighs infinitely more than a crossing in 5 minutes.
Using the MACD as a retail trader
Three safeguards make the tool truly useful. Favor long time frames, daily at a minimum, where the noise calms down. Look for divergences; a price that sets a new high while the MACD fails to do so is one of the most reliable warnings in technical analysis. And above all, never trade the MACD alone; confirm with market structure, volumes, and the RSI for overheating conditions.
Let’s broaden one last time. The MACD was designed for stocks in the 1970s, a world of short sessions and slow trends, and it has adapted without flinching to a continuously open crypto market, proving that crowd mechanics change less quickly than technology. Gerald Appel himself presented it as a contextual tool rather than a signal machine. Its crossings remain cousins of the golden cross and death cross, but more volatile. Same family, same limit; the past never writes the future.
