Waymo has submitted response materials related to the child collision investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The released responses are mostly redacted as 'confidential business information', and NHTSA plans to review additional responses for inclusion in the investigation file. This investigation pertains to an incident that occurred on January 23 in Santa Monica, California, where a 2024 Jaguar I-PACE robo-taxi from Waymo collided with a 9-year-old pedestrian at around 8:30 AM. The vehicle had no driver and was operating under Waymo's fifth-generation autonomous driving system. According to the NTSB report, the vehicle turned left after dropping off passengers at a stop sign in front of an elementary school and was traveling north when the collision occurred. The collision point was in a school zone with a speed limit of 25 miles per hour, and the student entered the roadway between stopped vehicles. The Waymo vehicle was traveling at 17 miles per hour when it braked and collided with the student. The student reported minor injuries but did not require hospital transport. NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation PE26001 on January 28 to investigate whether the robo-taxi paid attention to the young pedestrian. Waymo requested an extension for the response deadline on May 1 and submitted some responses on July 8. However, specific details regarding speed judgment in school zones and risk recognition criteria have not yet been disclosed.
