Sonic Announces Shift to Revenue-Driven Model with $7.6 Million Decrease in Aave Deposits
Sonic (S) has announced a shift in its growth criteria for Layer 1 blockchains from technical performance and token design to actual revenue generation. The discussion around the reduction of Sonic distributions on Aave (AAVE) has been presented as a case for this transition. Sonic Labs CEO Matt Visser emphasized the importance of generating and distributing revenue after product launches. Aave's Sonic deposits have decreased to approximately $7.6 million, with quarterly revenues falling below $5,000. CEO Visser stated that maintaining this scale of integration is financially challenging. According to Aave's governance documents, Sonic distribution deposits have dropped from $28.9 million to $7.6 million over the past six months, with remaining borrowings at $2.7 million. Sonic's new business direction is divided into four areas: payments and foreign exchange, AI agent infrastructure, perpetual futures and real-world assets, and prediction markets. CEO Visser indicated that each project will have designated personnel and milestones. In the payments sector, a proposal to white-label Frax's frxUSD as USSD has been suggested, while in the AI sector, network upgrades are currently undergoing internal testing. In the perpetual futures and RWA sectors, the goal is to achieve 24-hour trading and rapid finality. It remains to be seen whether Sonic's pivot will lead to improved performance, with a detailed execution structure expected to be unveiled in the fourth quarter.
