StarkWare Validates Quantum-Safe Locking Mechanism on Bitcoin Mainnet
Starknet introduces a Quantum-Safe Bitcoin solution (QSB), with StarkWare researchers having validated a quantum-safe locking mechanism on the Bitcoin mainnet that does not require a soft fork, new opcodes, or modifications to consensus rules. The first QSB output was completed on August 26, 2026, in Bitcoin mainnet block 964199, with related GPU computing costs reduced from approximately $320 to about $50. QSB constructs the locking mechanism through hash calculations, but each transaction still requires significant computation, and assets transferred into this solution must still undergo traditional transactions that are at risk of quantum threats. This transaction does not comply with Bitcoin Core's default relay rules, and currently, there are no compatible wallets, address formats, or recovery processes. StarkWare states that QSB is an emergency research solution, and a long-term solution will still need to introduce post-quantum signature mechanisms through a soft fork; the comprehensive quantum resistance of Starknet also depends on the upgrade progress of Ethereum's underlying infrastructure.

No sale has been confirmed. On October 8, 2026, US government-linked wallets moved 12,267 BTC, worth about $1.01 billion, out of a wallet holding funds seized in the 2016 Bitfinex hack, to new unlabeled addresses with no exchange deposit recorded. On-chain data shows movement, not intent, and no US agency has explained the transfers.

The Bitcoin price briefly fell below $81,000 on October 9, 2026, its lowest level in nearly three weeks, after repeated failures near $87,000. A bond selloff, weaker tech stocks, spot ETF outflows and a long liquidation wave all added pressure. The $80,000 area is now the key support, while $83,000 is the first level bulls need to reclaim.
