Seven Suspects Charged with 82 Counts in Crypto Kidnapping Investigation in Toronto
A total of 82 charges have been laid against seven suspects in connection with the armed kidnapping of a cryptocurrency exchange owner in Toronto. The incident occurred on July 25 in North York. The victim was forcibly taken by a group while walking near Finch Avenue East and Bayview Avenue. The suspects handcuffed and assaulted the victim while attempting to gain access to his crypto assets. The victim was released but was threatened not to report to the police. It is still unclear whether the suspects obtained any cryptocurrency. A notable aspect of the investigation is that three of the seven suspects are members of the Canadian Armed Forces. These individuals have been identified as 22-year-old Talarambage Fernando, 29-year-old James Moreau, and 24-year-old Jack Miley. Fernando and Moreau were arrested on August 11, while Miley was apprehended on September 24. The suspects face charges of armed kidnapping for ransom and forcible confinement. The Canadian Department of National Defence reported that Fernando joined the reserves in January 2020. The investigation is ongoing, and the charges will be subject to court review.
