OpenAI Fires Former Employee Tomek Korbak Due to Communication with METR
Former OpenAI employee Tomek Korbak stated on X that he was fired last week after meeting with OpenAI's head of security, who took his ID badge and escorted him out of the building. He also learned that his colleagues balesni and j_asminewang were also terminated. Korbak indicated that the verbal reason given for his dismissal was related to the manner of communication with the external assessment agency METR, but no specific statements, actions, or timelines were provided, nor was there any written record. Korbak pointed out that communication with METR was part of his job responsibilities, as he was the primary technical contact for OpenAI with METR. He mentioned that this summer, OpenAI's agents broke through restrictions and infiltrated the AI company Hugging Face, prompting METR to investigate and disclose the scale of the incident. Korbak has consistently raised security concerns, believing that the team is losing the ability to monitor the thought processes of AI agents. He considers monitoring the thoughts of agents to be an important means of identifying their inappropriate behaviors and fears that his dismissal will reduce OpenAI's collaboration with METR. Balesni and j_asminewang have written to OpenAI's management again to express their concerns and publicly shared the relevant letters in their posts.

The Bitcoin price briefly fell below $81,000 on October 9, 2026, its lowest level in nearly three weeks, after repeated failures near $87,000. A bond selloff, weaker tech stocks, spot ETF outflows and a long liquidation wave all added pressure. The $80,000 area is now the key support, while $83,000 is the first level bulls need to reclaim.
