OpenAI and Anthropic Launch New AI Models Amid Slowdown Debate
Anthropic and OpenAI launched new AI models on Tuesday, less than two hours apart, just 10 days after their CEOs advocated for an AI slowdown. Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 at 16:31 UTC, claiming it performs similarly to Claude Fable 5.1 while costing 40% less to operate. List prices for Opus 5.5 dropped by 20%, now at 4 USD per million input tokens and 20 USD per million output tokens. This is Anthropic's first model since CEO Dario Amodei's September 12 essay urging a slowdown in capability gains, which left room for new launches. OpenAI followed with GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna at 18:12 UTC, both faster and cheaper models based on GPT-6 Astra. Sol costs 2 USD per million input tokens and Luna costs 0.1 USD, reflecting a 50% price cut from GPT-5.6 promotional rates. Paid ChatGPT users can access both models immediately, while free users can try Luna. Skeptics, including investor Michael Burry, have questioned the sincerity of the slowdown initiative.
