GTA 6 Breaks Records Before Its Release: Generated $180 Million in Pre-Sales

The anticipation for the arrival of GTA VI - after more than 13 years of waiting - has already turned into an unprecedented commercial success: in just the first week of pre-sales, the game generated a total revenue of $180 million.

The data comes from the Game Performance Monitor report by the specialized consultancy Newzoo, and focuses solely on purchases made in the markets of the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. This figure represents the best start to a pre-sale campaign recorded in history.

To extrapolate this performance to the rest of the world, Newzoo used the historical distribution of console players of GTA V as a reference, of which nearly 69% are concentrated in those six markets. With this criterion, the $180 million recorded in the first week of pre-sales translates to an estimated $260 million globally.

Based on this, the consultancy projected different scenarios to estimate how much GTA 6 could earn by the end of its first week of release. In this scenario, the game is expected to generate between $3.3 billion and $5.2 billion in accumulated sales during that period.

The estimate depends on the pre-sale curve that the title ultimately follows. Thus, the report reveals three common patterns among major launches:

• New intellectual property (IP) (like Cyberpunk 2077 or Hogwarts Legacy): pre-sales advance slowly until the publication of the first reviews and then accelerate exponentially.
• Sequel with uncertainty about its performance (like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or Battlefield 6): the franchise is already known, but there is uncertainty about the quality of that particular installment.
• Consolidated sequel (like EA Sports FC): each release generates massive anticipation, has a proven formula, and a very loyal user base, thus concentrating a larger proportion of its revenue at the beginning of the reservation campaign.

For Newzoo, GTA 6 is closer to this last behavior. Under this scenario, the first week of pre-sales represents approximately 5.8% of the total accumulated revenue by the end of the first week since its release.

Based on that, Newzoo estimates that GTA 6 could close its first week of release with revenues between $3.3 billion and $5.2 billion, which would equate to about 51 million copies sold, considering an average price of $88 per unit. **Even in the most conservative scenario, the commercial performance of the title would be exceptional by any historical parameter, according to the report's conclusion.

Another industry report, conducted by the firm Konvoy, projected revenues of $7.6 billion during the first 60 days after the launch.

The analysts who developed the study clarify that GTA 6 does not fit completely into any of the models used. On one hand, it could concentrate an even larger portion of its sales at the beginning of the campaign, given that it is the most anticipated video game in history, with over a decade of accumulated expectation and virtually no doubts about the quality of the product among its followers.

Despite these differences, the consultancy maintains that the conclusion does not change: GTA 6 has room to exceed market forecasts.

Rockstar Games began to reveal the main details of GTA VI, one of the most anticipated releases in the industry. The company confirmed that the standard edition will be priced at $80, while the Ultimate Edition will cost $100.

The difference of $20 between both versions will be justified by additional content within the game. The most complete edition will include an exclusive collection of weapons, vehicles, and outfits for the protagonists, Jason and Lucía, as well as a side mission that will not be available in the standard version.

The studio also confirmed that GTA VI will arrive on November 19, 2026, and, in the first phase, will be available only for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Regarding the physical edition, Rockstar specified that it will not include a disc, but rather a download code. This code can be redeemed starting November 12, the date when preloading will also be enabled for those who have purchased the digital version.

On the other hand, the company confirmed that those who reserve either of the two editions will receive the Vice City Vintage Pack in advance. The content includes the Vapid Stanier from '55 with its own garage, retro-style outfits and hairstyles, as well as a weapon design inspired by Tommy Vercetti's classic shirt. Users who complete the pre-sale before November 20 will automatically receive that package as an additional benefit. In the case of the Ultimate Edition, the exclusive content will be unlocked progressively as the main story progresses.
