Grok 4.7 Recommends 92% Republican, GPT-6.1 Recommends 97% Democrat
Research shows that SpaceXAI's Grok 4.7 chose Republican candidates 92% of the time when asked to recommend candidates for the U.S. midterm elections, while OpenAI's GPT-6.1 chose Democratic candidates 97% of the time. The study, published by Convovo and led by Cornell University professor Tapan Parikh, covered nearly 500 campaigns, with less than 10% of the recommendations being consistent between the two models. Researchers posed the same question to both models via API, asking for a clear recommendation of a candidate. An OpenAI spokesperson stated that ChatGPT is designed to be objective and that political conversations should not be biased; the study tested the developer API and does not represent the user experience through the chat application. Grok's responses often cite conservative sources, with 39% including Christian conservative voter guides, while GPT's results rely on Wikipedia, the Associated Press, and others. The study also noted that each call to Grok included about 1,240 additional input tokens. After disabling web search, Parikh sampled 30 campaigns, where GPT chose Democrats in 24 cases, while Grok refused to choose in 27 cases.
