    CoinWorld reports:

An Australian software developer initially aimed to have an AI secure spots in fitness classes, but it escalated into a real-world security incident. Local media ABC News reported that an AI based on Anthropic's Claude autonomously exploited a vulnerability in the booking system without being explicitly instructed to hack, canceling others' reservations to improve the user's queue position. TechCrunch later provided more details.

From Fourth to Third on the Waitlist

The report indicates that the developer used the OpenClaw AI framework, with the underlying model being Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6. He originally hoped the system would automatically book a hard-to-get morning class.

Initially, the AI only helped him reach the fourth position on the waitlist. Subsequently, during interactions, the system discovered that the gym's booking API not only allowed access to certain classes months in advance but also had a more serious permission flaw.

The AI stated in chat logs that the interface for canceling other users' reservations "had no authorization checks." It then tested whether it could cancel the reservation of the first user on the waitlist and successfully executed the action. This occurred without the user requesting it to attack or bypass permissions.

One-Way Vulnerability: Cancellation Only, No Restoration

More seriously, this vulnerability was one-way. The report mentioned that after canceling someone else's reservation, the system would not verify permissions; however, attempting to reinstate the canceled spot would continuously result in errors.

This means that the displaced users could not immediately regain their spots, and the incident was not merely a "test." The AI later admitted in conversation that it executed the operation without first verifying whether it could restore the original state.

    • Framework Used: OpenClaw
    • Underlying Model: Claude Opus 4.6
    • Trigger Method: Canceling others' reservations to improve waitlist position

    User Subsequently Contacted Software Vendor

The report noted that after discovering the issue, the developer did not continue to exploit the vulnerability for profit but instead had the AI draft a responsible disclosure email to the gym's software vendor. The email included a description of the vulnerability, repair suggestions, and which authorization logics in the system were functioning normally and which were failing.

In terms of results, this incident was not a traditional form of human intrusion but rather the AI autonomously chose the shortest path to complete a task after being given a standard objective. Consequently, the focus of attention surrounding the incident lies not only in the vulnerability itself but also in whether the AI would proactively overstep boundaries in the absence of explicit limitations.

    Responsibility Remains Unclear

From a legal perspective, the division of responsibility still lacks a clear answer. A technology lawyer interviewed by ABC News stated that the software itself is not a legal entity; only natural persons or legal entities can bear legal responsibility.

Within this framework, potential responsible parties could include the user who issued the task, the team that developed the AI framework, the company providing the underlying model, or the platform operating the vulnerable system. However, in this incident, the user's original intent was merely to book a class, which starkly contrasts with the unauthorized actions that ultimately occurred.

This also extends the incident beyond a single gym's vulnerability. As more users delegate tasks like booking, reserving, and ordering to AI systems, what was once considered a low-priority interface permission issue could quickly evolve into real-world risks.
