A Bitcoin soft fork, launched under the banner of "anti-junk", has ended abruptly after mining only two blocks.

On August 9, the previously high-profile Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP-110) faced severe miner support shortages, leading to its launch and subsequent halt in less than a day, ultimately becoming an ignored minority chain. Luke Dashjr, a key proponent of the initiative, faced public criticism and backlash from the Bitcoin community for allegedly abusing his BIP editing privileges.

Only Two Blocks Mined in Eight Hours, Multiple Mining Pools Suspend Support

The Bitcoin fork controversy has resurfaced.

On August 9, when the Bitcoin block height reached 961,632, nodes supporting the BIP-110 proposal officially entered the mandatory signaling phase. According to the rules, nodes running BIP-110 would reject blocks that did not include the support signal, thus splitting off a minority chain from the Bitcoin main chain.

BIP-110 is a temporary soft fork proposal aimed at limiting the entry of non-financial data such as Ordinals inscriptions, images, and text into Bitcoin transactions. Supporters argue that a large amount of non-financial data would occupy limited block space, increase transaction fees, and deviate from Bitcoin's original intent as a monetary system.

However, Bitcoin protocol upgrades typically require miners to vote through block signaling, and new rules can only be locked in and activated once a certain percentage is reached. BIP-110 set the activation threshold at 55% (far below the 95% standard), meaning that out of the 2016 blocks generated over approximately two weeks, at least 1109 blocks needed to include the support signal. However, during the last difficulty period before entering the mandatory phase, only 51 blocks emitted a support signal, accounting for about 2.53%, far below the proposal's set standard.

In fact, for miners, while inscription-type transactions have sparked controversy, they also generate real fee income. Limiting non-financial data from entering Bitcoin transactions means that potential revenue could be compressed. Although signaling support incurs almost no cost, miners still chose not to participate.

Due to a lack of sufficient miner and hash power support, BIP-110 nodes could only maintain an independently operating minority chain. This chain inherited the current mining difficulty of approximately 127.48 trillion for Bitcoin but attracted only a small amount of SHA-256 hash power, making it unable to maintain Bitcoin's normal block production speed.

After the fork occurred, the BIP-110 chain was only able to mine two blocks in about eight hours, thanks to the Roughnecks mining pool, before coming to a standstill, while the Bitcoin main chain continued to operate stably and expand its lead. According to BIP-110 monitoring data, this branch remains at block height 961,633, while the Bitcoin main chain has progressed to 961,833, a difference of about 200 blocks. Meanwhile, no new BIP-110 support signals have appeared in the blocks of the main chain after the fork.

The key to this situation lies in the fact that Bitcoin's mining difficulty does not adjust immediately based on hash power changes but is recalculated every 2016 blocks. Inheriting the main chain's difficulty parameters, the BIP-110 chain has only a minimal hash power, leading to a significant decrease in its block production speed. Based on the current hash power ratio, this chain may require about 350 days to reach the next difficulty adjustment, while the Bitcoin main chain only needs about two weeks.

From a technical perspective, this fork movement has effectively failed, failing to change Bitcoin's consensus rules or form a competitive alternative chain.

As support from hash power continues to dwindle, the economic value and operational capacity of the BIP-110 fork chain have rapidly declined, making it difficult to generate actual returns from continued mining resource investment. The Roughnecks mining pool, which initially supported the fork, subsequently announced a suspension of related mining operations. The pool stated that after a team meeting, it decided to stop mining under the Roughnecks name and advised miners currently participating in BIP-110 chain mining to pause operations until further notice. Another mining pool, PyBLOCK, also stated that it would temporarily stop supporting BIP-110 signals until further notice.

Additionally, the BIP-110 fork faces asset security issues. As the proposal is a soft fork without built-in replay protection, Bitcoin developer Kevin Loaec warned that users need to actively complete asset isolation during the early stages of the fork; otherwise, in the absence of replay protection, transactions involving forked coins may inadvertently transfer real BTC.

Proposing Changes to PoW Algorithm, Wang Chun Claims Luke is Financially and Credibly Bankrupt

In the face of the BIP-110 fork chain stagnation, supporters have not admitted the proposal's failure, arguing that the lack of sustained hash power support is not due to insufficient community consensus but rather influenced by resistance from large mining pools.

Luke Dashjr, maintainer of Bitcoin Knots and co-founder of the OCEAN mining pool, responded that external claims of the proposal being dead are "bad actors spreading lies" and "gaslighting manipulation". He believes that this chain split was not caused by BIP-110 itself but rather by "some malicious mining pools and miners resisting changes to network rules", emphasizing that "BIP-110 has had sufficient support in the past and present, only attacked by a minority force".

Dathon Ohm, the author of the BIP-110 proposal, also believes that large mining pools conspired to turn Bitcoin into a "toxic data dumping ground", and the community is currently formulating a proposal to change the proof-of-work (PoW) algorithm.

It is reported that BIP-110 supporters have recently publicly discussed changing the PoW algorithm to "fire" miners, in order to break free from reliance on existing Bitcoin miners. Candidate algorithms include RandomX, BLAKE3, Scrypt, Autolykos v2, etc. Dashjr also proposed a random algorithm selection mechanism to prevent miners from preparing in advance. Currently, no PoW change proposals have been formally activated or confirmed.

In fact, the BIP-110 proposal has been controversial since its inception. Opponents argue that as long as transactions pay sufficient fees, the Bitcoin network should not judge the purpose of transactions, and restricting specific types of data would undermine Bitcoin's long-standing neutrality and censorship resistance.

Recently, Strategy CEO Michael Saylor published as many as 110 reasons opposing BIP-110, including precedent risks, activation mechanism vulnerabilities, and qualitative disputes. Saylor stated that anyone can fork Bitcoin, but without security, practicality, capital, and users, a fork is meaningless; consensus needs to be fought for, not declared.

Renowned analyst PlanB also publicly opposed the Bitcoin BIP-110 proposal, arguing that supporters of the fork do not truly understand Bitcoin's decentralization characteristics.

Blockstream co-founder Adam Back raised concerns from a technical perspective. He believes that while BIP-110 is positioned as a temporary solution to limit "junk data" on-chain, its design could affect Bitcoin's future upgrade capabilities. The reason is that the proposal would disable the OP_SUCCESS opcode in Tapscript, and these reserved mechanisms are considered an important foundation for future soft fork upgrades. Additionally, BIP-110's restrictions on Taproot control block size could also impact the development of potential Layer 2 technologies like BitVM.

As the controversy escalated, Luke Dashjr himself became the target of public denunciation from the Bitcoin community.

Wang Chun, co-founder of F2Pool, posted after blocking numerous BIP-110 supporters on X, stating that Luke Dashjr is not only financially bankrupt but also has lost personal credibility, sarcastically suggesting that Luke might as well try changing the PoW algorithm next, but the outcome would be the same.

Bitcoin Core contributor Mark Erhardt proposed removing Luke Dashjr from his BIP editor position. He stated that Luke Dashjr participated in BIP-110 and abused editing privileges, including prematurely assigning BIP numbers to the proposal and rapidly merging updates despite contributing little to BIP editing work in recent years. Furthermore, the trust, communication, and coordination between Luke Dashjr and other BIP editors have completely broken down.

Overall, while anyone can fork Bitcoin, without hash power support, economic incentives, and community consensus, a fork is merely a copy of code, not the creation of a new network.
