Bitcoin Now Has a Feature of Future Money Imagined by Elon Musk
- Elon Musk mentioned watts, mass, and energy as references for measuring money.
- The entrepreneur links his vision of future money with advancements in AI and robotics.
Future money might have less to do with dollars and more with the energy required to produce it. This is one of the ideas proposed by Elon Musk, which has reopened the debate about bitcoin (BTC), an asset whose operation depends on energy expenditure. An analyst argues that, in addition, its current price is well below a valuation based on that characteristic.
Musk shared this vision during an interview with his biographer, Walter Isaacson, on the podcast The Builders, published on October 20. The entrepreneur believes that advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics will reduce the relevance of labor and conventional money, although currency will continue to exist. Instead, he thinks it could be measured using physical magnitudes such as watts, mass, and energy. In June, he had already expressed a similar idea on X.
Although Musk did not mention bitcoin, his proposal partially aligns with the operation of this asset. Its network uses the proof-of-work mechanism, through which miners employ computing power and electricity to validate transactions and contribute to the security of the system.
Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole Investments, developed a model that estimates the value of BTC based on variables linked to mining, including hashrate, hardware efficiency, and supply evolution.
At the time of writing this note, bitcoin is trading around $84,300–$84,400, compared to an estimated energy value of approximately $137,000. The difference equates to a discount of about 38.5%. If it were to reach that reference, its price would rise by about 63% from the current level, as indicated in the chart below.

However, this valuation does not constitute a guaranteed target price. Edwards' model suggests that the quotation tends to return to its energy value, but the market also responds to other factors. Additionally, the hashrate measures the processing capacity of miners, not their exact electricity consumption, which also depends on the efficiency of the equipment.
Bitcoin also does not fulfill all of Musk's vision. Although its consensus mechanism links the security of the network with energy expenditure, it does not establish an equivalent relationship with mass. The entrepreneur could also be referring to using energy as a unit of account, without the need for a digital currency.
The relationship between Musk and bitcoin also has contradictory precedents. In 2021, Tesla suspended payments in BTC for purchasing vehicles due to concerns about the use of fossil fuels in mining, as reported by CriptoNoticias. However, the company did not abandon the asset: it holds 11,509 BTC in its reserves. Meanwhile, SpaceX retains 18,712 BTC, according to information published in October 2026. Together, both companies hold 30,221 BTC, although these corporate reserves do not equate to Musk's personal holdings.
Musk's proposal raises a fundamental question: if energy gains weight as a measure of value, could bitcoin lead a transformation in the way money is understood? Tags: Bitcoin (BTC) Elon Musk Latest
