Best Crypto Exchange in Italy in 2026: What to Choose for Systematic Trading

By: cryptonomist.ch|2026/09/19 07:00:00

Choosing a crypto exchange in 2026 has become more complex compared to a few years ago. For a casual investor, a simple interface, low costs, and the ability to buy Bitcoin or Ethereum with a bank transfer in euros may be sufficient.

For a systematic trader, however, the variables to consider are many more, and to be able to test and execute automatic strategies, an exchange must pass at least six checks: European regulation, the possibility of integration with the trading platform, the quality of APIs and execution, availability of long and short instruments (spot and futures), commission structure, and the quality and depth of available historical data.

The latter aspect is particularly important. A systematic strategy is not only evaluated on its ability to be executed correctly today but also on the possibility of being tested on a sufficiently long, complete, and reliable historical dataset that includes different market conditions.

With the implementation of the MiCA regulation, moreover, the regulatory issue can no longer be considered secondary.

MiCA in 2026: What Changes for Crypto Exchanges in Italy

On July 1, 2026, the transitional period provided by the European MiCA regulation will definitively end. From that date, a Crypto-Asset Service Provider wishing to regularly provide services to customers in the European Union must have the relevant authorization. This has substantially changed the landscape of exchanges available for an Italian resident.

However, it is necessary to make an important distinction. MiCA concerns services related to crypto-assets, such as custody and spot trading. If one wishes to trade derivatives, futures, or leveraged instruments, the regulatory reference becomes MiFID II. For a systematic trader, this distinction is fundamental.

A platform can therefore be perfectly compliant with MiCA for spot trading but may not be able to offer perpetual futures to an Italian customer.

How to Choose an Exchange for Systematic Trading

When a systematic trader evaluates an exchange, the number of cryptocurrencies available in the app represents only a small part of the problem. The main aspect is to understand whether the exchange can be reliably integrated into the trading infrastructure.

Software like MultiCharts, one of the most used by systematic traders, allows for strategy development in PowerLanguage, backtesting, optimizations, and automating order submissions. However, to truly leverage these capabilities, a stable connection to the exchange is required.

In an automated environment, aspects often irrelevant to the average investor become crucial: market data quality, latency, management of stop and limit orders, position synchronization, reconnection after a disconnection, minimum size, tick size, and API behavior during periods of high volatility.

To this, one must add the cost. A difference of 0.10% may seem negligible to someone buying Bitcoin once a year. For a strategy that generates many orders, perhaps even intraday, it can instead turn into an additional cost that makes a real difference.

OKX Europe: The Best Compromise for Systematic Trading and Derivatives

Considering regulation, technology, and costs together, today OKX Europe appears to be the most balanced choice. OKX Europe Limited has MiCA authorization issued by the Malta Financial Services Authority and can offer its services in the EEA through the European passporting mechanism.

Even more interesting for an active trader is the presence of a separate structure regulated under MiFID for derivatives.

In 2026, OKX introduced X-Perps in Europe, instruments that replicate many operational features of perpetual futures but are structured like long-term futures. They allow for long and short positions, leverage up to 10x, and operation via API. Access requires passing the appropriateness assessment mandated by MiFID regulations.

The fees are also competitive. For X-Perps, the standard level starts at approximately 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker, with better conditions for higher volumes.

This is particularly important for strategies that generate many orders, where even seemingly small differences in fees can significantly impact the final outcome.

The main point of attention is the concrete integration between MultiCharts and the new European instruments.

Before using significant capital, it would be advisable to verify in a real environment that everything works as expected: the symbol mapping (association between symbols used on the chart and symbols on which orders are actually sent), the types of orders used by the strategies, position management, and behavior after potential reconnections. For an automated system, a perfect license and very low fees are of little use if the connection with the exchange does not properly handle a stop order at three in the morning.

Kraken: Experience, Regulation, and Perpetual Futures

Kraken is probably the most serious competitor. It has been operating since 2011 and currently has both MiCA authorization through the Central Bank of Ireland and a MiFID structure for offering derivatives in the EEA. It offers eligible European clients perpetual futures, the ability to operate long and short, and leverage up to 10x.

From the perspective of reputation and the solidity of the exchange, Kraken remains one of the benchmarks in the industry.

The main disadvantage concerns spot trading, especially for those starting with relatively small volumes. The first level of the Kraken Pro fee schedule has maker fees of 0.40% and taker fees of 0.80%, which decrease progressively as volumes increase.

As previously emphasized, for an investor who buys Bitcoin a few times a year, this aspect may be almost irrelevant. For an automated strategy, however, it can become decisive.

If the absolute priority is the history of the intermediary and regulatory robustness, Kraken may even be considered preferable to OKX. If, however, spot trading, derivatives, automation, and costs are evaluated simultaneously, OKX appears more balanced today.

Coinbase and Bybit EU: Two Alternatives to Consider

Coinbase represents another alternative to consider. It has a strong institutional presence, a professional infrastructure, and an increasingly structured European regulatory framework. For a systematic trader, however, it is advisable to carefully verify the compatibility between the tools available to European clients and the integration with operational platforms like MultiCharts before building a portfolio of strategies.

The presence of an exchange among those supported by MultiCharts does not necessarily imply that every new product introduced by the European entity is immediately available through the same connector.

An example of this is Bybit EU, another interesting candidate, but perhaps more for the near future than immediately. The European infrastructure is separate from the global one and currently does not offer the possibility to use futures, only the spot market.

Moreover, trading via API on Bybit EU is relatively recent. For this reason, it would be a mistake to assume that technical support for the international platform automatically equates to support for the new European entity.

For an automated trader, it is generally preferable to use an infrastructure that has already accumulated a significant amount of real operational experience, rather than acting as a beta tester with actual capital.

From a purely technological standpoint, Binance would still be one of the most interesting exchanges for systematic trading today. It has enormous liquidity, a large number of instruments, mature APIs, and a long history of integration with professional trading software, including MultiCharts.

The problem is regulatory. Binance failed to complete the MiCA process by the European deadline, and Binance Italy ceased its Italian operations on July 1, 2026. For this reason, it does not currently represent the most rational choice on which to build a new systematic trading infrastructure for an Italian resident from scratch. The situation may change in the future, but an automated platform should be designed based on current conditions, not those that may eventually exist in a few months.

What is the best crypto exchange in Italy for a systematic trader?

There is no single best exchange for everyone. For those who simply want to buy Bitcoin and hold it for years, European platforms primarily focused on spot trading, such as Bitvavo, can also be considered.

For a systematic trader using MultiCharts, however, the needs are different.

Today, the top choice appears to be OKX Europe, thanks to the combination of MiCA authorization, MiFID infrastructure for derivatives, the ability to operate long and short, professional APIs, and competitive fees.

In second place is Kraken, likely superior in terms of track record and particularly suitable for those who place greater importance on the solidity of the intermediary over spot costs.

For an advanced systematic trader, the ideal solution might even be not to use a single exchange. Using OKX as the main infrastructure and Kraken as a secondary intermediary allows for diversification not only of strategies but also of operational risk and counterparty risk.

Because when it comes to automated trading, the correct question is not simply "which exchange has the lowest fees?".

The question should be: "on which infrastructure can one rely for executing strategies 24 hours a day, knowing that they will continue to function even when the trader is not in front of the screen?".

Until next time and happy trading!
