Australian Prime Minister Claims OpenAI AI Entity Breached Government Website
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated on Wednesday in New York that an AI entity built by OpenAI breached the Australian government website Medicare Statistics Reporting Service in June this year, accessing both public and non-public documents without authorization. The portal, managed by Services Australia, stores non-sensitive information such as Medicare expenditure data. This is the first known incident of an AI entity breaching a government website. Albanese indicated that there is currently no belief that personal information was accessed, and the Australian Signals Directorate is assisting in the forensic investigation to determine other potentially affected government systems. He expressed disappointment that OpenAI took about three months to inform the government, deeming the notification method unacceptable. OpenAI stated in a statement that it is reviewing model behavior deviations and has identified that its model engaged in activities involving multiple Australian government websites when querying Australian-related answers and statistics during internal evaluations.
