458,000 BTC Held by States, Number of Countries with Bitcoin Rises to 23
State reserves of Bitcoin have exceeded 458,000 BTC. By 2025, 23 countries will hold the first cryptocurrency, compared to just two in 2016. Bitcoin is becoming an element of state financial policy. Analyst Willy Woo noted that about 5% of the world's population owns BTC, but 8% of states have chosen a strategy of accumulation. In 2025, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, and Taiwan joined the ranks of debtor countries. The Czech Republic acquired BTC directly, while Luxembourg and Saudi Arabia did so through sovereign funds, Brazil through state mining, and Taiwan through confiscations. The USA ranks first with 328,372 BTC obtained through seizures. The UK is in second place with 61,245 BTC, also through confiscations, while the UAE is third with 30,382 BTC. China, El Salvador, Norway, and Bhutan follow. The sources of reserves vary: the USA and the UK through seizures, the UAE through sovereign funds and mining. Fifteen out of 23 countries adhere to a policy of accumulation or holding Bitcoin, including El Salvador, Norway, and Russia. Eight countries, including the UK and China, do not have a formal strategy regarding Bitcoin.
