Zcash Activates NU7 on Its Mainnet
The developers of Zcash have decided to activate the NU7 upgrade on their mainnet on October 20, 2026, with a tentative deployment on November 5. The upgrade, according to ZIP document 259, introduces changes to the consensus rules, highlighting the reduction of the block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds to improve latency in transaction confirmations. During the testing phase on the testnet, an average time of 17 seconds was recorded over more than 49,000 blocks. The monetary policy of the protocol will not be affected, maintaining the issuance cap at 21 million ZEC. However, 60% of transaction fees will be allocated to a reserve for future rewards. The activation of NU7 will prohibit the processing of transactions in the Sprout pool, immobilizing existing funds in this format. Wallet and exchange providers will need to stop building transactions in version 4 and warn about invalid operations after the upgrade. Regular transactions can be signed in compatible versions (5 and 6), but there will be no replacement format for Sprout.
