Wall Street IPO Activity Plummets as Investors Reject High Valuations for AI

Wall Street's IPO activity has significantly slowed down, with investor demand for new stock offerings dwindling and growing concerns over excessive valuations putting pressure on what was expected to be a wave of listings. The delays in the IPOs of Anthropic and OpenAI have affected the sentiment in the U.S. equity capital markets. A head of a large asset management firm stated that current investors are only focused on Anthropic. Although this year's IPO of SpaceX boosted investment banking activity, the market's concerns about the downside risks in the AI sector and public opposition to data centers have led to a depletion of the IPO market. Investors are questioning the high valuations associated with companies linked to the AI investment boom. According to BCA Research, technology companies that went public this year have seen their stock prices drop by an average of about 23% since their first trading day, exacerbating concerns that banks are overpricing deals to secure underwriting business.
