The United States has postponed the implementation of a 50% additional tariff on Canadian alcohol, dairy products, and automobiles to 1:01 PM Korean time on the 22nd. This measure is a temporary delay rather than a withdrawal of tariffs, and U.S.-Canada trade negotiations will continue until the new implementation date. The White House announced on the 18th that it would change the effective date of three additional tariff measures announced on July 20. President Donald Trump indicated that the 50% additional tariff was in response to Canada’s discriminatory restrictions on U.S. products. The White House explained that the negotiation situation was cited as the reason for the delay, noting that Canada had shown willingness to eliminate discriminatory measures. The U.S. stated that Canadian imports of U.S. alcohol decreased by approximately 81% from March 2025 to February 2026. Canada imposes a 25% tariff on certain U.S. vehicles, and while most existing retaliatory tariffs have been lifted, tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles remain in place. This delay does not signify the end of trade conflicts, and the remaining procedures involve the enforcement notice from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and potential modifications to the tariff schedule. Any further extensions or separate agreements would require an official announcement from the White House or the Canadian government.
