UK to Invest £500 Million in Anti-Money Laundering Over Next Three Years, Adding 500 Law Enforcement Personnel
The UK government has announced that it will invest £500 million over the next three years in anti-money laundering and asset recovery strategies, and will recruit an additional 500 personnel in police forces, the National Crime Agency (NCA), and the Crown Prosecution Service to trace and seize criminal funds. This funding comes from an economic crime tax levied on regulated businesses. The NCA estimates that over £100 billion is laundered each year through UK or UK company structures, with the development of fintech, cryptocurrencies, and AI increasing the associated risks. The new personnel will support the "Destabilise operation," which targets Russian networks converting street cash into cryptocurrencies. To date, this operation has arrested 119 individuals suspected of money laundering and seized over £25 million in cash and crypto assets in less than a year.
