Trump Announces Highway in Africa Named in His Honor

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Morocco will name a 1,055-kilometer highway in Western Sahara in his honor. This decision reflects recognition of the kingdom's sovereignty over the disputed territory during his presidency in 2020, which contributed to an investment boom in the region. In a video on Truth Social, Trump showcased desert landscapes and sections of the highway, which cost around $1 billion. The road connects the cities of Dakhla and Tiznit and runs through territory that Morocco considers its southern provinces. The highway is one of the longest in Africa and covers 7% of the continent's Atlantic coastline, becoming part of a network linking West Africa to the Mediterranean coast. Western Sahara, roughly the size of the United Kingdom, is a resource-rich territory that has been contested between Morocco and the independence movement 'Polisario Front' since 1975. Following recognition of sovereignty by the U.S., France, and Spain, the region is experiencing development, including the construction of a $1.3 billion deep-water port and tourist resorts. Trump expressed gratitude to King Mohammed VI for the honor and hopes to travel the entire highway; however, official Morocco has yet to confirm the renaming.
