Tokenized Money Market Funds: Differentiated Structures through Redemption, Fees, and DeFi
Tokenized money market funds have varying structures based on redemption periods, fees, on-chain liquidity, and DeFi usability, even when they include U.S. Treasury bonds and repurchase agreements. Centrifuge is set to publish a report analyzing these differences. According to Centrifuge's survey, 86% of respondents identified the expansion of existing product distribution as a top priority over the next 12 to 18 months. 31% of respondents viewed programmability as a key differentiator in on-chain finance. Tokenized money market funds represent shares of traditional financial products on the blockchain, with some products available for daily redemption and others taking several days, impacting the convenience of fund management. The fee structure varies by product, and even with the same underlying assets, the actual returns to investors can differ. The usability in DeFi is also a determining factor in the structure, as tokens should be usable as collateral in lending protocols or as liquidity provision tools. Panera Capital analyzed that 12% of tokenized assets can seamlessly integrate with DeFi. Regulatory structures restrict free transfers, and JP Morgan's on-chain money market fund documentation includes procedures that allow transactions only with pre-approved blockchain addresses. JP Morgan Asset Management launched the tokenized money market fund JLTXX on Ethereum in May, which invests in U.S. Treasury bonds and repurchase agreements. Centrifuge's report will focus on comparing the distribution methods of tokenized money market funds with the connectivity to other financial protocols.
