Terence Tao Warns of AI Mining Mathematical Open Problems
Renowned mathematician Terence Tao posted on Mathstodon, pointing out a new issue facing the mathematical community: identifying promising open problems has become a scarce resource. Rumors have emerged that someone is researching a particular problem, which could trigger a massive influx of AI computational power to solve it first, potentially exhausting the original research before it has fully developed. He believes that the indiscriminate use of AI problem-solving tools, while providing short-term solutions, could harm the research ecosystem that supports mathematical progress.
