Optimism Enables Unichain and OP Mainnet Native Interoperability, Supporting ETH Transfers
The Optimism Foundation and the Unichain Foundation plan to launch the OP Stack native interoperability feature on the mainnet, with the first interoperable chains including Unichain and OP Mainnet. This feature will validate cross-chain messages at the protocol layer without relying on independent third-party cross-chain bridge validators. The initial phase will focus on supporting native ETH transfers between the two chains, with plans to expand token support, application integration, and more chains in the future. This plan requires technical preparation and governance approval. Upgrades 20 and 21 will establish the infrastructure for interoperability but will not directly activate cross-chain interoperability; specific activation arrangements will be submitted through separate governance proposals. The initial phase does not include support for general ERC-20 transfers, unified balances between the two chains, or liquidity pools, nor does it support atomic execution of arbitrary cross-chain application processes.
