Microsoft Launches Third-Generation AI Chip Maia 300, Set to Reduce Dependence on Nvidia Next Year
On October 12, Microsoft announced the release of its third-generation self-developed AI acceleration chip, Maia 300, which is planned to serve as the main architecture for running AI models, gradually reducing reliance on Nvidia GPUs. The Maia 300 is expected to enter production in 2027, with each data center rack capable of housing 96 chips, achieving a sevenfold increase in AI token processing capacity and a 40% improvement in token processing efficiency per megawatt compared to GPUs. Microsoft aims to deploy multi-gigawatt clusters of Maia chips, with Microsoft 365 Copilot being the first to benefit from the performance boost. Evercore ISI analysts estimate that by the first quarter of 2027, Maia chips will account for about 10% of Microsoft's AI chip spending. Currently, the Maia accelerator is for internal use only and is not available for external rental, while Nvidia and AMD will continue to participate in Microsoft's model training business.
