Jensen Huang's GTC Speech Disrupted by Greenpeace Protests Over Chip Supply to Russian Military
During his 20-minute speech at the GTC in Berlin, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang faced protests from Greenpeace Germany while introducing the new generation of AI computing platforms. Protesters stood on chairs, unfurling banners questioning why NVIDIA chips were found in Russian military drones and highlighting the environmental damage caused by AI expansion. They projected the message "NVIDIA, clean up your dirty business" onto the stage screen. As security prepared to remove the protesters, Huang gestured for them to be gentle and allowed them to speak, acknowledging the importance of their questions but expressing a desire to finish his presentation first. In August of this year, Ukraine's Defense Intelligence Agency discovered NVIDIA Jetson Orin computing modules in Russian S-71 cruise missiles, and similar products were also found in the wreckage of Russian military drones. NVIDIA stated that Jetson is not sold in Russia and was not designed for military use, as it is difficult to track the whereabouts after being resold in the second-hand market. Greenpeace's research indicated that NVIDIA's disclosed indirect carbon emissions from its supply chain have increased by 725% since 2020. Although NVIDIA's own operational electricity is matched with renewable energy, not all East Asian suppliers use clean energy. Greenpeace is calling on NVIDIA to expand its renewable energy goals to the entire manufacturing supply chain by 2030 and to conduct independent audits of global distributors to prevent chips from entering military equipment.
