Jay Clayton to Head Trump Administration's Artificial Intelligence Efforts
Jay Clayton, former chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), is poised to be appointed as the head of artificial intelligence for the Donald Trump administration. This appointment, given Clayton's history of legal actions against companies operating in the cryptocurrency market, could be significant for the crypto industry. If he takes on this role, Clayton will be responsible for overseeing the U.S. government's program for the development and management of the artificial intelligence industry. Clayton, who previously served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, was appointed this year as the Director of National Intelligence and also chaired the SEC during Trump's first term. In 2017, he established a special unit called the "Cyber Unit" within the SEC and filed 57 cases against digital asset operators. One of the most notable cases was the SEC's lawsuit against Ripple in 2020, which claimed that Ripple had offered $1.3 billion worth of XRP tokens without registering them as securities. Clayton's stance on cryptocurrencies was shaped during Trump's first term, when Trump himself did not have a positive view of this market.
