Italy Arrests 30 in Mafia-Linked Digital Asset Money Laundering Operation
Italian authorities have arrested 30 individuals on charges of operating an underground bank linked to mafia organizations and laundering criminal proceeds through digital assets. The organization is reported to have transferred approximately €68 million abroad, concealing the flow of funds through false invoices, bank accounts, and digital asset exchanges. The Milan prosecutor's office announced the detection of a money laundering operation that involved transferring drug trafficking profits and fictitious corporate transaction payments overseas. The investigation has expanded to Spain, and Swiss authorities are also working to secure an additional suspect. The organization's key base is a car rental company in the Pero area near Milan, suspected of being a secret financial institution operated by suspects linked to major mafia organizations such as 'Ndrangheta and Camorra. The organization allegedly issued false invoices through shell companies, thereby reducing taxable income. Prosecutors stated that the scale of the false invoices exceeded €110 million. Some of the criminal proceeds are suspected to have been used to support imprisoned members of the 'Ndrangheta organization, and allegations of corruption involving Milan court staff are also under investigation.
