IMF Calls for Contributions from Members for Vulnerable Countries
Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, warned that economic developments and advancements in artificial intelligence threaten to widen the gap between advanced and developing economies. The rise in interest rates in advanced economies has increased the debt service of emerging markets from 6% to 14% of their fiscal revenues. During the Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank in Bangkok, Georgieva emphasized that the risk of divergence is more dangerous for lagging countries. The IMF reaffirmed its commitment to financial assistance and called on member countries to fulfill their contributions to the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust Fund, which provides zero-interest loans to vulnerable economies. Additionally, it requested global powers to recapitalize the Catastrophe Containment and Relief Trust Fund, which provides grants for debt relief to poorer nations. Georgieva mentioned that rising prices of fuels and food, along with decreasing international aid, are putting pressure on these countries. According to IMF projections, global growth is set at 3.1% for 2026, affecting developing countries more severely. Scott Bessent, U.S. Treasury Secretary, urged the IMF to intensify actions against practices that distort competition, implicitly referring to China.
