Glamsterdam Gas Cost Adjustment Requires Smart Contract Review
The upcoming Ethereum (ETH) upgrade, Glamsterdam, is adjusting the gas costs associated with on-chain state creation and access, increasing the need for reviewing certain smart contracts, wallets, and infrastructure tools. While most contracts will not be affected, those structured with fixed gas costs may experience execution failures or performance degradation. The Ethereum Foundation has stated that EIP-8037 and EIP-8038 will adjust the costs for on-chain state creation and access. EIP-8037 proposes to increase and separately measure the costs for new accounts, new storage slots, and deployed bytecode, while EIP-8038 aims to align the costs of reading or updating existing states with the current state size and processing burden. As the state grows, the amount of data that nodes must store and read also increases, making the gas cost adjustment in Glamsterdam akin to recalculating network resource usage. The official Ethereum roadmap indicates that Glamsterdam will be an upgrade in Q4 2026, with key goals including Layer 1 scaling, establishing parallel processing, and curbing database expansion. The foundation has re-executed past mainnet transactions with the new gas schedule to analyze impacts, asserting that most transactions and smart contracts will not be affected. Contracts that may pose issues are those that have fixed gas costs coded in, such as fixed stipends and fixed gas values upon invocation. Gas estimation tools are also under review, and wallets and infrastructure must reflect the new rules for users to maintain existing workflows.
